Frequently Asked Questions

How do you paint your oil paintings?

All of my paintings are sketched from your photo and then hand-painted with premium oil paints on 7/8 inch thick back-stapled, stretched canvas. The sides of the canvas are painting to match the front so that you can hang the painting as is – no framing necessary!

What’s the difference between oil and acrylic painting?

While acrylic paint is plastic-based, oil paints are natural pigments mixed with linseed oil, making them more expensive. They also take much longer to dry than acrylic, which dries almost instantly. The slow-drying of oils opens up more possibilities for blending, but also makes this medium much harder to control. Paint must be applied in layers, and layers must dry in between painting time. Because of the layering, oils also allow for more depth.

What is the order process?

It’s a very easy, 5-step process!

  1. Submit order with photo references. Email or use the online form to inquire about a painting and supply the photo(s) of the pet(s). Express any details about what you would like painting to look like, including size of canvas, potential changes to the subject or background in the photo and/or possibility of combining photos.
  2. Confirm order and payment. Once I have discussed and approved all order details with you, I’ll send a Photoshop mock up of the painting for you to review, suggest changes and approve. Any major changes or alterations to the photo need to be made at this point. Once you’ve approved the mock up, payment should be made in full either through PayPal or by Mail.
  3. Painting in Progress. I will start your painting within the time-frame set forth when your order was placed. The first step will be sketching the subject on the canvas. From that point on, I’ll begin to send weekly digital updates so that you can watch your painting unfold! This is a great time to give any feedback and make minor changes to the painting.
  4. Approve Painting. When the pet portrait is completed, I will send a digital proof of the final painting for your final approval. Reasonable alterations can still be made at this point – I want to make sure you are 100% happy with your portrait before it leaves my home!
  5. Delivery/Pickup. Once you’ve signed-off on the painting and it has had the necessary time to dry, I will ship the painting within the time-frame discussed. FedEx or UPS Ground is used for shipping, and each painting will be carefully wrapped and packaged before it leaves my home.

If I have more than one pet, do they need to be in the same photo?

No! Because of my graphic design history, I can easily combine pets into one photo. However, I do ask that the photos of your pets be taken from the same angle so that one doesn’t look out of place. Each additional pet you add to a portrait will be an extra $25 from the base price.

What size image should I send, and how many?

The larger the image you can send, the better the painting will be. Since I work directly from your photograph, I need to be able to zoom very close into the photo so that I can see all of the details in your pet. If your photo looks pixilated or grainy, the painting will lack detail as well. Photos should be clear and in focus, and your pet shouldn’t be too far back in the painting.

I don’t like certain things about my photo. Can you make changes?

Absolutely! Again, because of my graphic design training, I can easily manipulate backgrounds or change things about your photo that you don’t like. However, I do ask that any changes you want to make need to be completed BEFORE the painting process starts when you see the digital cropped, Photoshop mock up.

When do I pay?

In order to get on the client list and into my queue, payment must be made in full when the order is placed. This is due to the amount of time and cost of supplies I spend on each painting. Payments can be made through either PayPal, Etsy or mail-in check.

How long does it take to complete my painting?

Completion of an oil painting typically varies between 6 and 8 weeks. The time-frame from start to completion may vary upon many factors. These factors include size of the canvas, number of subjects in the painting, background complexity, changes throughout the process, and most importantly, the number of paintings that I currently have in my queue. There is always a waiting list, and I take orders on a first come first served basis. Most paintings will be started within 2-4 weeks of order placed and completed within 4-6 weeks after the start. If your date-needed falls within 6 weeks of your order date, please let me know at the time you place your order so that I can do my best to accommodate you or make alternate arrangements.

Do you offer framing?

At this time, I do not offer framing. This is mainly because each customer has a different style and I do not keep a variety of frames in stock. However, the sides of the canvas are painting to match the front of the painting and the canvas already comes on the stretcher bars, so framing is absolutely unnecessary! If you still feel you would like a frame, trying visiting your local craft store like Michaels or AC Moore. Check your local store’s website for 40% coupons or 50% off sales.

Can I see my painting in progress/before it’s done?

Absolutely! From the moment I start on your painting, you will start to get digital updates via email on a weekly basis. Once the painting is finished, I’ll send you a final digital update of the painting with multiple views for your final approval before shipping. You can also check out the progress of your painting (and others) by visiting my facebook page.

Can I request changes to the painting?

Yes, you may request changes at ANY TIME during the painting process! I want your painting to look perfect, so I’m 100% willing to make all changes until you are happy. Please keep in mind, however, that MAJOR changes after the painting has already begun may cost extra depending on the extremity.
